from the vaults : a blinder two-and-a-quarter-hour late night saftmasheen episode from 2005 which completely cheered me up when i re-listened to it today. it kicks off with tom verlaine’s yonki time and the first hour is an assortment of new york sounds including the velvets etc - the second hour is a reggae/dub mix and in the third hour all sorts of zoned out instrumental stuff including mogwai and movietone with almost no talking. yay.

ok so for those who are only familiar with elvis costello’s clearly inferior cover, i haven’t completely given up on locating my robert wyatt shipbuilding 12″45 - but whilst you are waiting here is the wonderful final song on his 1974 release rock bottom also featuring that other great british eccentric, ivor cutler on … um … baritone harmonium, and vocals.

i must admit to having a small soft spot for the style council. i particularly like how unpopular they became. here is that spiritual feeling, a track from the last “lost” album they recorded in 1989 : modernism a new decade. rejected by their record company it is a funky little jive. perfect for those hot days. groove with your bottom.

a zine on the radio!? oh yeah…! the cd edition of “you” by luke … but where was jason? and did tamara and/or jason ever show up? or not? will we ever find out? also songs from frog eyes, beirut, the mountain goats, patti smith, tim buckley, robert wyatt, bright eyes, the wonder stuff and many others…

* this was the last radio/broadcast edition of saftmasheen - but it will continue as an occasional podcast and i will be progressively archiving all the recordings from my various broadcasts over the last 20 years on this site, so check back often!

elsewhere i am writing on loss and i have started a list there of all the things i’ve lost - at three thirty this morning i woke up remembering another item to add to the list : the patti smith piss factory single on the original mer label (and the stanley single by snatch!) were in that box of singles i sold for $100 at newtown markets when i was a desperate student in the late eighties … damn! i wonder how much that would be worth now … and also : i love that song … i lie there for about half an hour thinking about it in the dark night … the original piss factory single on the mer label … bought by me in 1976 … in the rough trade shop in london …
